Photo sent to me from CG’s garden when she asked to help her identify her orchid.

Photo taken by me of my 2017 calendar issue by the Singapore Botanical Gardens, featuring drawings in full colour from the library archives.

Most were commissioned during the tenure of Henry Ridley during 1888-1908, drawn by the famous de Alwis brothers from an accomplished Sri Lankan family of botanical artists.

According to NParks, the lithophytic orchid originated from the mountains of Peninsula Malaysia mostly found above 1000m. Plants bloom mainly between Nov-Jan and June-Aug.

Inflorescences are up to 30cm with numerous small flowers.

My all time favourite. Because its in red. It has my favourite flower/ tree – the flame of the forest.  The theme is red/ orange.
Such a Chinese colour but its by a Dutch lady who died in Indonesia.

Its not easy for the flame of the forest to flower. I am very pleased that it has achieved centre stage.

The oldest surviving tree planted by Mr Lee Kuan Yew in 1963 is still flowering.

From wiki
Berthe Hoola van Nooten (née Bartha Hendrica Philippina van Dolder; 12 October 1817 in Utrecht – 12 April 1892 in Batavia), was a Dutch botanical artist, noted for her botanical plates illustrating “Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l’Ile de Java” in 1863-64.

Orchid Garden at the Botanical Gardens

image

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is one of the most outstanding gardens in the world and recognised as a heritage site. Most foreigners do not realise that we have a tradition since 1957 of cultivating orchids and naming them after dignitaries who visit our country.

The first person to have the honour was the wife of Singapore Governor.
