I’m in Bangkok, Thailand, at the nursery opposite Or Tor Kor. Or Tor Kor is across the street from Khampaeng Phet MRT station, take the underground pass.

Saturday is celebrating the color of purple. I kid you not, check out the wikipedia site. Hence, Im not including photos of Tiger Orchids. But how to bring home? They are so tall.

Purple has different symbolic meanings in different cultures. It is the color of Advent and Lent for the Catholics, a symbol of mourning for the crucifixion as well as for royalty – the resurrected Christ. To the Thais, purple is color of mourning.

Arches – stepping into paradise

image

Greeted by arches of orchids as one steps into the Jurong Bird Park. I always wonder why I dont go there enough. Arches of pink, yellow, gold and finally white palaenopsis moth orchids.

While every culture has gates to signify entering new territory, the shape of arch seems to be Greco-Roman and later borrowed by the Muslims.

Arch de Triomphe in Paris. Wedding arches. What do arches remind you of? A rainbow? God’s promise to man? A covenant?

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is one of the most outstanding gardens in the world and recognised as a heritage site. Most foreigners do not realise that we have a tradition since 1957 of cultivating orchids and naming them after dignitaries who visit our country.

The first person to have the honour was the wife of Singapore Governor.
