On most days I eat simply and have a soup for dinner.
Recently, a good friend for over 30 years passed through Singapore, and we brought him to io Italian Osteria. (I went along for the treat, excited because a friend coincidentally posted eating places at Hillview. What’s the buzz?)
If you’re in the Upper Bukit Timah area, it’s worth a visit. But do book and they’ve 2 seating for dinner. It was packed at 630pm for Sunday nite. I was told that lunch on a weekday was quite empty.
Ask for a window seat as it can get quite claustrophobic and you hear the conversations from the other table.
For starters, we had a Schiacciata truffle which was like a foccasia with cheese and truffles.$15 for 4 pieces. I doggie bagged one piece and the next day it was just as yummy.
The porcetta pork belly was oooooh so good, crispy skin and melt in the mouth. $14. So was the pasta special with truffles. $42.
But we were disappointed with the meat special $80 which was delivered cold and flavourless. Likely it was sous vide and then pan seared. A friend had it the last time he was here and remembered it was very good. But not today. When the waitress saw that we had a huge chunk left over, she didn’t ask why we didn’t finish it. Etna in Tanjong Pagar serves better beef. The pistachio tiramisu $10 was so-so. It’s very easy to make tiramisu, and I was waiting to be wowed. Not today. (Never order something you know how to make.)
The next table ordered fish and it looked really good, soft snow white flesh that melts in your mouth. If I’m in the area again.
The Italian waiters though are very knowledgeable about the food and make very good recommendations about the wine. Ask for them.
