Taitung City

Taitung for two days can be fun but travel out of the city. Within the city the night is cooler and offers different choices.

Take the Taiwan Shuttle bus NT$50 per pax one trip from the Train Station. It has various stops. Ask the helpful driver

What to eat

Blue Dragonfly fried chicken at 大同路. You’ll spot the long queue of young people.

During my queue they replenished the batch of drumsticks 3 times. Imagine the volume and the crispness of the food.

榕树下米苔目 Mi Tai Mu at 大同路

Short noodles with shaved fish and bonito flakes. We each had our own bowl. It’s a Southern Chinese comfort food. I have never eaten this in Taipei
In Singapore we have a different version by the same name. Verdict: I prefer the Taitung version but the queue can be off-putting. One person to queue for food and another to reserve seat. While the place is air conditioned you don’t want to linger for too long because of the crowd.

My favourite drink stall is Dingo. Watch the fishes while waiting for your drink. The winter melon drink is refreshing.

To open a shop just selling mochi, it has to be good, even if it’s not on the local food guide. Taste better when it’s cold. Cheaper than what you get in Taipei and more QQ.

Can’t stand it. Taitung is hot.

This bean curd stall is on the local map. It’s at the end of the night market in 正气路. As good as any you can get in Taipei. But if you’re needing a dessert and glutinous rice balls.

You see long queues, just join. Likely to be tourists from Taipei.

Other famous food is pig’s blood. I ate that as a child in Singapore and it no longer appeals to me. So I didn’t try it.
Stinky tofu is famous and deep fried rather than the steamed version.

We were introduced to a famous minced pork rice stall but judging from the sanitary conditions I didn’t want to try nor post a picture. After all Taipei and Tainan are famous for that so I don’t need to risky hygiene standards to try it.

What to do

Night market on 正气路Zhengqi Road.

Return to start of night market, cross the park and walk further to 铁春路 Tiechun road where you’ll see lanterns hanging by the old restored railway station. There’s a small shopping mall across the road. All the big tours stop there. On weekends, Sat-Sun Indie music is played  by the aborigines. Music Festival at 铁花村.

Take the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle back to the Taitung train station.  Look for No. 8 bus sign.
